A Year in Monochrome

A running series of images showcasing my exploration of B&W

Story by Glenn Charles February 23rd, 2014

My Leica Monochrome

I had dreamed of one day owning a Leica, a camera that I always felt would fit my style and my eye, but as can be understood, was out of my league. Finally, after selling off all my DSLR kit, I was able to make the leap and acquired not only a Leica, but one that only shot B&W. I had felt for a while that I was entering into a bit of an artistic rut, and needed something to push me to a new level and a new way of seeing. The MM has been that and more.

An obligatory cat photo

Two weeks in with the Monochrome and I was working on so much. Learning to see in B&W and how to accurately focus a range finder camera were two of the biggest obstacles I faced.

Unbelievable tones

This shot, of Lucy, in front of the fire with only a single spot from above, to me, captures the beauty and essence of this camera.

snow & ice

A constant ebb and flow this winter of snow, melt, freeze, and ice. With miles of beaches and woodlands to explore, I have carried the Monochrome with me every single day since its arrival in December.

birds of flight

Out for a hike along the beaches, these birds and their pattern of flight caught my eye. I am constantly drawn to patterns, I guess it is just the way my mind sees the world.

the watcher

A great example of the power of manual focus lenses. I saw this seen unfolding and new that I wanted to capture it from behind the mesh netting. The range finder focusing allowed me to easily focus on the boys hair, ignoring the mesh net that lie between us.

subtle tones

An afternoon of cross country skiing led me to this scene. The subtle tones of the snow, highlighted by a ray of sun on this small growth were what drew me in. The MM has a base ISO of 320 requiring the use of ND filters out in the bright light of mid day.

running Free - Not

A tough winter led us to Kentucky for a very brief vacation. Riding through horse country on our bicycles, tasting Bourbon, smelling the mash in the air, allowed us time to recoup from dealing with the C word.

A Year of Monochrom

It is hard to believe that the year is coming to a close. It seems like just yesterday that I took a leap of faith and bought a ridiculously priced camera that only shot B&W. Who would do such a crazy thing and how could it possibly work out. Well, I am here to say that even though I have since added a color option, the Monochrom is the finest camera I have ever shot. It does not matter what I do, when that camera is paired with the Summilux 50 — well, it is the things that dreams are made of. Truly a very special camera indeed.
